How to Submit Your DNA Sample

Follow these 5 simple steps to get your kit processed at our state-of-the-art laboratory.

What You’ll Need:

Coffee filter cut into a triangle (1 for each sample)

Toe nail clippers

Alcohol wipes

Paper towel or gauze

Permanent marker for labeling

Ziplock bag

Prepare Your Sample

Label ziplock bag with the number of samples you are sending 1-etc.

Wash your hands before handling the birds.

Clean toenail with alcohol

Trim just the tip of a toenail or prick the pad of the toes with a lancet until a small drop of blood appears.

Gently massage the toe until a few drops of blood appear.

Allow a few drops of blood to soak onto the coffee filter.

Stop the Bleeding

Apply gentle pressure with gauze or a paper towel for 30–60 seconds.

Return the bird to its pen once bleeding has stopped.

Dry the Sample

Allow the blood sample to air dry completely.

Do not stack or seal samples while wet.

Package and Ship

Place the fully dried sample in a separate ziplock bag for each sample. Place ziplock bags in the labeled envelope.

Mail according to the DNA testing submission instructions. Please obtain tracking number.

Tips for Best Results

✔️Clean toenail clippers with alcohol after each sample obtained. 

✔️ Label samples before collecting.

✔️ Allow samples to dry completely before packaging.

✔️ Avoid touching the blood spot with your fingers.

✔️ Prevent blood from different birds from touching each other.

Important: Cross-contamination is the most common cause of inaccurate DNA results. Use clean equipment and collect one bird at a time to ensure the most reliable results.
